Simple pendulum

Aim

Use a pendulum’s length and period to estimate gravitational acceleration.

  1. Find the period by timing several complete oscillations.
  2. Test how changing length changes the period.
  3. Calculate an estimate of g from a T²–L graph.

Apparatus

  1. Stable retort stand with a clamp
  2. Light string carrying a small pendulum bob
  3. Metre rule for length and stopwatch for timing
