Diode V–I characteristics

Aim

Measure how a diode’s current responds to voltage in forward and reverse bias.

  1. Set up and identify forward and reverse bias.
  2. Use a V–I curve to describe a diode’s non-linear response.
  3. Explain how a series resistor limits the diode current.

Apparatus

  1. Silicon diode with a series current-limiting resistor
  2. Adjustable low-voltage DC source
  3. Voltmeter, current meter with a suitable range, switch, and leads
